Presentation :

Champagne Georges Laval, Cumières Premier Cru

The south facing slopes around Cumières form a natural arc overlooked by the forest and the abbey of Hautvillers and bordered by the Marne river. With their roots deeply anchored in the chalk, the vines in Cumières enjoy exceptionally good exposure to the sun and this promotes early ripening of the grapes. The archives of the village show that my ancestors cultivated vines here as long ago as 1694.

As a dedicated vigneron three considerations influence my work: thoughtfulness, pleasure and respect :

  • Old vines are preserved,
  • Organic methods have been used since 1971,
  • As much manual work as possible is carried out by 3 dedicated artisans: Raphaël, Dylan and Esteban whose task it is to maintain the 2.5 hectare estate (the average in Champagne being 1 employee for every 3 hectares),
  • Yields are modest and the harvest is a joyous occasion,
  • Natural vinification is carried out in barrels,
  • The individual character of each plot is respected and preserved. The cuvée Garenne is a blend of wines from several plots plus reserve wines, whilst the other cuvées bear not only the name of the village, Cumières Premier Cru, but also the name of the plot they come from: Les Chênes, Les Hautes Chèvres, Les Longues Violes,
  • Last but not least, comes the undeniable pleasure of tasting wines made without anything artificial.
